Map to share using certificate rather than login/password?

We have an ugly VB application that runs on Win2k Pro systems that are
members of workgroups. All the systems need to map to a particular share on
any other system which used to transfer files between the systems. Right
now we are using a common login/password on all the systems to facilitate
the drive mapping. We want to use something like a certificate that would
reside on all the systems that would be used to authenticate rather than
having to worry about someone changing the login or password which exists
only to map through. The systems will not usually have access to the
Internet or any other systems while they are connected since they are
usually connected through a hub or cross-over cable with nothing else
visible to them.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as the current scheme is
starting to cause problems.
