SSL client certificate authentication

Hi ,
  Can i implement the SSL client certificate authentication without
enabling the certificate mapping or is it mandatory to use the
certificate mapping in the IIS server?

1>If the certificate mapping is mandatory here, is there any other
method of mapping other than doing it in the IIS server?

2> If i do the mapping in the IIS server, it should be mapped to each
and every user, which is cumbersome task... Is there any other way of
mentioning the criteria as "Subject verification" for certificate
validation? Is there any configuration file present for this?
