This is a problem for the Office people. I'm no Access expert. (sorry
'bout that)
I believe that most Office apps make all but the first open handle
read-only. This is to avoid the write-back race condition that could happen
with shared files. To the best of my (very limited) knowledge, this is by
design.
Try an Office newsgroup for more details. The OS folks aren't going to be
much help (myself a case in point).

I was wondering if anyone has had an problems with using Access 97 & Access 2000 on a windows 2000 server. These databases were working properly when located on a novell server, however; since we switched to a Windows 2000 server, we are unable to have more than one user share a database. It will not even let a user open the database in Read Only mode if another user has the database open. I have determined that it is related to the folder permissions assigned on the server. Our server is a SAN attached drive on a W2K server, and 4 processors, NTFS file system and is a Compaq 8500. There are two groups of permission rights established. One which will allow "Everyone" Read Only rights, and another with allows (LERWM) List, Execute, Read, Write, Modify rights. Below is the results. Prior when working off of a novell server, no user was denied any ability to open a database or a table from a database. Thanks for any help you can assist with this! Craig Read only user opens linked table: · LERWM user not able to link a table · LERWM user not able to open database · LERWM user able to open linked table (Only in read only mode) · Another Read Only user able to open database · Another Read Only user able to link a table · Another Read Only user able to open a linked table Read only user opens database · LERWM user not able to link a table · LERWM user not able to open database · LERWM user able to open linked table (Only in read only mode) · Another Read Only user able to open database · Another Read Only user able to link a table · Another Read Only user able to open a linked table LERWM user opens linked table: · Read only user not able to link a table · Read only user not able to open a linked table · Read only user not able to open database LERWM user opens database · Read only user not able to open linked table · Read only user not able to link a table · Read only user not able to open database
