We had this problem also. To fix it we went booted using
the installation cd (if you needed drivers to get to your
scsi drives you would do this here), choose the repair
option, went into the recovery console, choose the
installation we wanted to work with. Enter the local
machine admin password.
>From here you will want to move down into the backup
directory for the patch. (c:\WINNT\$NtUninstallQ815021$)
copy the dll ntdll.dll from here to c:\WINNT\system32. I
told it to copy right over the top of the new dll. Once
this is down type exit to reboot. Don't forget to take
out the floppy! Once you are rebooted and logged back in,
uninstall the patch through the normal uninstall
procedures. You will need to reboot again, but it will
have copied the original dll to all the right places and
removed the registry entry.
We had this happen on two machines. Both running SP2.
All of our other servers running Windows 2000 are running
SP3 and had no problems with the install.
