I'm sorry, no solution yet, but I ran into the exact same problem
today.

I'm using Win2KPro on a standalone notebook, no domain, and I recently
installed SP3. Also, I noticed in trying to add a user to a group, as
you described, the listbox that is supposed to show who is in the
group does NOT show the text of the member's names, but only the
little face icons. Weird.

I'm going to try uninstalling SP3 and see if that makes a difference.
