Can't login after adding/replacing user's machine

One of our users needed a new machine. In order to be sure that all files
would be available, we left the users old machine on the network. Using that
machine, we were able to login to the domain without any problem.
However, if we attempted to login with the new machine, we received an
'access denied' message. We then added a new user account and could login
with the new machine without any problem.
Can anyone shed some light on what was wrong?
