I've got the identical settings and version numbers showing as Adam. (i.e.,
IsInstalled is set to hex value 1; my "PlayerVersion" shows "6.4" and
underneath my "FileList" are "File1" and "File2" -- File1 showing msdxm.ocx
at version 6.4.9.1124, and File2 showing dxmasf.dll also at version
6.4.9.1121

Also, I ran qfecheck and did find one recent patch (Q810649 - a post SP3
security roll up hotfix) which needed to be reinstalled. I did that, and
ran qfecheck again and it passed with flying colors. Unfortunately, Windows
Update is still showing the Windows Media Player patch as being a critical
update which needs to be applied. I even tried reapplying the Media patch
again (just in case fixing Q810649 might have made a difference) but no
luck. Even after immediately reapplying the patch it still shows as a
critical update which needs to be applied. Very frustrating to say the
least!

Thanks for the suggestion though!

OK you might try this. Go into regedit and look at this key:

Interesting that both of us have this problem and also have identical
settings.

Look at the Name IsInstalled. It should be 1 decimal or HEX doesn't matter.
Mine says for Media Player 7.1 but under this key I have a FileList and then
under that I have two subkeys File2 which has FileName msdxm.ocx and is for
version 6.4.9.1134 and another File6 which has FileName dxmasf.dll and
version 6.4.9.1121. The IsInstalled may be where the trouble lies.

Mine shows version 6.4.9.1124 for msdxm.ocx and version 6.4.9.1121 for
dxmasf.dll

The other thing to try is get qfecheck from Microsoft and run that to make
sure none of your Hotfixes "Need to be reinstalled."

I don't get this bevavior of which you speak. So just a thought.
