Sorry for my many questions but it seems that setting up a home network is
not that simple after all.
I have two computers, one running Win2k and the other Win98.
I want to set up Internet Connection Sharing on the Win2k computer, so that
the Win98 computer will be able to connect to the Internet through the Win2k
machine. So, I have set up a home network.
1. How can I secure my home lan so that Internet users will not be able to
access my shares on my two computers? Does unchecking the Client for
Microsoft Networks and File and Print Sharing components on the Internet
Connection which is shared help?
2. I have placed passwords on the Win98 shares. I heard that Win9x passwords
can be cracked even without a dictionary attack. Is this true and how come?
Now about my file sharing. I want the Win98 computer to be able to read
files and print to a printer connected to the Win2k computer through my home
lan. Though I can see the Win98 computer from My Network Places on the Win2k
machine, the Win98 computer cannot access the Win2k computer.
1. How can I properly set up a secure file sharing on Win2k? Do I have to
add a new local user for the Win98 computer or does giving access to the
Everyone group on my shares is enough?
2. I have tried scanning my Win2k computer with a network scanner but it
does not find it, although it does find the Win98 computer. Perhaps some
group policy is wrong:
A. What should be the value of the Access this computer from the network
group policy option under the User Rights folder?
B. What should be the value of the Additional Restrictions for Anonymous
User policy be? What is its purpose anyway?
And finally,
3. There are many security groups which are not explained in help and on the
Microsoft web site. For example, what do the following groups mean and
should I use them at all?
Authenticated users,
anonymous Logon,
batch,
interactive and above all,
network.
For example if I set the allow network users access on the my shares will
this make them accessible to the Win98 computer but keep them safe from the
Internet?
Thanks in advance for your time and patience!
P.
