Another problem that shows up after installation of updates:
Can you crack this one?
In System Information / Software Environment / Network Connections of Win2k
Pro PC the Status for mapped drives of administrator created shares, say
Userdata, Netapps or Resource, on a NTFS drive on a server show as
"Degraded", net use shows them as "Disconnected" and Explorer shows red
crosses under the drives.
However, mapped drives of default shares C$, D$, E$ etc. on the same server
do not exhibit the problems and neither do the mapped drives of shares held
on FAT32 drives.
This causes serious problems with software that autoupdates numerous files
on a mapped drive.
During investigations I discovered that the problem appears to have been
caused by MS Media Player's updates and especially WMP 9. I can remedy the
situation on new installations of Win2k by removing the updates or WMP 9 but
this does not work on older installations.
Note: this is a separate issue from those caused by some utilities on Compaq
PCs or server share timeouts described here:
