Looks like my problem was because I added the packages to the group policy
using \\alias\share as the source of the installation point rather than
using the server's real name. According to
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;281308, if you
install W2K SP3 and add DisableStrictNameChecking=1 to the LANMANServer
(Server Service) parameters registry key then aliases should work, but
obviously this is not true in all cases.

Does anyone know how to tweak this service to allow aliases to work when
installing packages assigned to computers with group policies?
