I feel your pain: I've been admining the same setup for two+ years now
and the only fix is to give your users local Power Users on their
machines, or do what I do and just add the local Power Users account
to Domain Users if you are running a Windows domain. Or possibly
another solution would be to roll out a security template through a
GPO that would give proper rights on the offending local folder
settings, but I haven't done this (yet).
And, to make matters worse, it doesn't get any better with AutoCAD
2000/2002. Allegedly there are some registry hacks that will
remediate this problem, but I am unsure of their legitimacy. You may
wish to peruse the Autodesk support groups for more info as this is a
common topic.
This is really an unfortunate topic and Autodesk has known about it
for some time. Granted they are not the only offending developer, but
the fact that I have to compromise my security policies this
obtrusively just to run such a common and ubiquitous application as
AutoCAD is hideous. You are a dog's breakfast Autodesk.
