This is what happens when you remove the delete permission from a folder and
use Office to view the files. IMHO this actually can be done but it gives
lots of error messages and problems and other side effects, so that few
people actually do it. Generally the answer is not to do it, and just keep
good tape backups running nightly.
If you do keep the delete permission, I have found that I have been able to
save files, although after all saves except the first save, I get an error
message saying the file save was unsuccessful, even though it was. Also I
find I am unable to use File, New to create new files, but can right-click
on the folder in Windows Explorer to select New, Document and then open the
new file in Office.
