Hmm... you could try keeping Task Manager or the www.sysinternals.com
utilities such as Process Explorer open to try to see if any one process is
to blame. You might also call Dell and find out if the problem is with some
of their firmware. Dell support should be free for that, and Microsoft also
offers free phone support for problems caused by security patches.
www.microsoft.com/support for phone numbers. Tell them up front that their
web site says this call should be free. Be sure to have the exact names and
numbers of the installed patches written down, installed service pack
version, etc.

You could also try stopping services and doing end task on services one by
one [especially stopping antivirus temporarily] to see if any of that stops
the problem.
