Thanx for the response. Unfortunately all my accounts
exhibit the same behavior. When booting in safe mode I
got a breif error message about not having enough virtual
memory befor it logged me out again. I'm wondering if my
pagefile took a hit.

I tried repairing with my installation CD but
unfortunately I can find no remnants of my pagefile. I
assumed all I had to do was delete it and the system
would create a new one. I think you r right about the
freinds greeting issue. At this point it looks like a red
herring.
