I doubt this is hacking. It could possibly be a corrupt user profile under
the c:\documents and settings\ folder. You might need to figure out a way
to rename the folder for that user while logged in as a different user or
using a boot floppy disk in order to create a new profile the next time the
troubled user logs in.
The Friends-Greeting email should not be destructive. Some people have
reported some problems, but I'm not sure whether these are really related to
the email.
PS you need an antivirus with the latest updates and a firewall. Both can
be had for free, example www.grisoft.com and www.sygate.com. check out the
