The only reason I can think of to post your shell (or python or perl or ruby or C or whatever) approach in this NG instead of suggesting the OP post to comp.unix.shell if they want a shell solution is because in comp.lang.awk you won't have shell/whatever experts looking at your posting and pointing out its flaws and/or suggesting better shell/whatever solutions since there won't be so many of those OT-experts around and even if there are they won't post corrections since that'd be OT for this group. ... since 'awk' shows up a lot over there. ...
