E-Week columnist Spencer F. Katt (TM) has this to say regarding Win2K
SP3 (http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,3959,514462,00.asp):
The Furball hears that some admins have issues with Service Pack 3 for
Windows 2000. They're finding that not all the security patches that
were supposed to be in SP 3 are there and that when they try to download
the missing ones, Windows won't let them. Apparently, it won't let you
go to patches that are pre-SP 3. A friend of the Furball said some
people have also found that machines with SP 3 installed aren't
recognizing certain characters in the password field during log-in.
I know nothing about patches that are supposed to be in SP3 but aren't.
HFNetChk hasn't shown this, but if it is true, I can imagine that the
pre-SP3 patches could NOT be installed after SP3. I find do find it
objectionable, however, that he reports patches being missing without
listing even a single example.
I haven't tested anything regarding passwords, so I cannot comment on
that one. I will say that at one time a few years ago, I could prove
that at least a few characters weren't handled correctly in the standard
login box. Maybe it's happened again.
Thoughts?
