Hello,
I discovered a problem with a new user and their workstation.
They were sharing accounts against my suggestion and had a sudden loss
of all her desktop icons. I predicted this might happen if two users
were using the profile at the same time. Eventually the client
decided to actually purchase the required CALs.
I created a specific user account and used the following path
\\servername\users\%username%\profile
map home drive to H:
\\servername\users\%username%\
after creation I shared the username file and assigned the correct
(hopefully) NTFS and Share rights to the username folder
I then removed "users" from the lines above. I know its less secure
but this is a 'work in progress' I intend to add "$" later to the
shares.
\\servername\%username%\profile
H:
\\servername\%username%\
The weird part is that the workstation this user has been using will
not allow a change of ANY profile from local to roaming.
I turned off line file caching on the shared folders. (another user
was being frustrated by his desktop repopulating even after cleaning
it up).
I was able to log on as this new user on two different (other)
workstations and create a roaming profile without a problem.
However, I could not bring this profile down from the server to the
"bad" workstation.
Even some of the profiles left on the system that had been roaming
before were now local only.
I did fool around with the *NT 4* policy editor and created another
(level of complexity ). I changed the folder redirection and voila I
was able to change from local -> roaming for any profile. I did NOT
want to utilize a band aid fix and wanted the correct GPO or registry
setting since this problem could start occurring with other
workstations.
I upgraded this workstation to service pack 3 but nothing seemed to
help it. As a temporary fix I copied the program settings and
desktop icons from the all users folder to their local profile.
Any ideas what is causing this? Rights problem on the workstation?
Default user? All users?
Any suggestions?
