I have (had?) a large encrypted partition under Win 2K.
I recently decided to upgrade to Win XP Pro, and didn't
back up my data first. The upgrade failed, and now I
can't manage to decrypt my data.
I installed a fresh copy of XP in a different partition ,
so I can access the encrypted partition (not the files
therein). But even though I imported my encryption cert
(from my original Win2K system) from floppy (into the cert
store in my new XP installation), I still can't decrypt my
files. I still have the Administrator's keys and certs
from the Win2K partition (they're not encrypted, though my
attempt to upgrade to XP may have corrupted them), and
I've designated my Adminstrator account on the new XP
installation as the default data recovery agent. I've
even imported my old Win2K Adminstrator cert/key. But XP
still won't decrypt these files for me. Any suggestions?
P.S. I called in a problem report to Microsoft, but they
were unable/unwilling to help me (they said that helping
out in such a case violates their policy regarding
security matters). While I can understand that on the
surface, the fact that I can provide substantial evidence
that I'm legitimate owner of the encrypted data leaves me
feeling a bit ill-used.
