sharepoint content security

I captured traffic between a windows 2000 client and a
sharepoint portal server 2001 and I can't find any
dicernable authentication or content that can be viewed
other that some http headers. Anyone know what the
default security mechanism that are in place for
authentication and content protection/encryption?
