Here's the response I posted when someone asked this question here 4 days
ago.
I'm guessing maybe the profile for the login ID you're using could be
corrupt. Try logging in as a different login ID, if there is one. That ID
could have the same problem. If so, creating another login ID could help
fix the problem, but this would require already having a network card in the
PC and using another PC on the network to remotely create a new user.
If this is not possible, renaming the profile folder for this user could
help, and a new profile is created the next time you log in. You could try
to do this by booting into safe mode by rebooting and pressing F8 every few
seconds during the bootup process. If this fails to work, you could try
using the Windows 2000 install CD or install floppy disks to boot into
recovery console mode and see if it will let you enter the following
commands:
cd\docume~1
dir
ren yourfoldername yourfoldername.old
If this fails to work and Windows is installed on a FAT-formatted partition,
you can get a DOS or Windows 9x boot disk and use the commands above to
rename the folder. If the partition is NTFS-formatted or don't care for
that method for some reason, you can move the hard drive temporarily to
another computer and use Windows Explorer to rename the folder, or download
and purchase NTFSDOS and use it on a DOS boot floppy to rename the folder,
or install Windows to a new second folder on the hard drive in the existing
PC and boot to that version of Windows to rename the other folder [this is
probably the last thing I'd want to try].
Of course, if the problem is not a corrupt profile, then doing this may not
fix the problem. I know that if Windows is suddenly unable to access the
partition where it believes the virtual memory swap file should be located,
it can cause a problem similar to this. However, if this was the problem,
usually I would think you would get a message regarding insufficient virtual
memory during login. If this was the problem, there are one or more fixes
for this at www.microsoft.com/support
