You really should have a firewall... nowadays, just disabling NetBIOS over
TCP/IP [not netbeui] and Windows Networking is probably not enough. [For
example, if you only removed NetBEUI from your network card, note that the
Netbios over TCP/IP property in your network card properties also allows the
same windows networking capabilities. Also, are you sure there are no
services running, for example in control panel, services? Running Fport
from foundstone.com can help you figure out what ports and services are
listening on your computer. The Remote Registry service is another
potential concern.]

A software firewall on every PC, such as sygate which is free for
non-commercial use is a start. However, software firewalls can be bypassed
and disabled, so a $70 to $100 Netgear NAT router with rules added to block
outbound connection is a good idea in addition to Sygate. Antivirus is
something else you want, and you could consider running [on your
internet-connected PC] a file checker such as languard file integrity
checker, also free, from www.gfi.com

I would definitely set a password for the admin accounts. If you don't want
to have to log in, you can enter the password into the registry to configure
windows to log in automatically for you at bootup. Note that someone who
gains access to your computer can read the password from the registry in
this case, though at that point you've arguably got larger issues to worry
about.
