You need a good backup solution. You can use a tape drive with Veritas /
NTBackup. You can use a CDRW with one of the CD writing programs (although
that definitely doesn't have the same capacity as tape). Or, if you're only
worried about drive corruption, install a nice big second hard drive and
back up to that.
It doesn't really matter how you set your drives up this way, as your backup
solution will be taking complete snapshots of the system. You can try to
cheap out by just backing up the system state, but if you really want
protection from malware, you should be backing up your whole system
partition and all the data you care about.
Also, document your system configuration (partitions, OS, etc.) because a
lot of backup solutions will require you to reinstall the OS, then the
backup software, then restore everything.
Yes, I know backups are a pain in the ***, but they're what you've got to
do if you really care about your information.
