        Hi,

A week ago I posted a message in
mirosoft.public.win2000.multimedia about my trouble to install
DirectX. As I didn't receive any response on that message, I
cross-post here a new description of the problem together with some
more details.

        I want to install DirectX 8.1 on a Windows 2000 Pro SP2
system. I downloaded DX81NTeng.exe from
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/downloads/drx81.asp , and
each time when I try to run the installation package, a dialog box
called "Digital Signature Not Found" appears. When I click on "More
Info" it says that the file "d3dim700.dll" is not signed.

When I continue the installation an error message box appears
saying "DirectX did not copy a required file", and then the
installation aborts.

Even when I set the 2 "Unsigned (non-)driver installation
behavior" settings to "silently succeed" (Control Panel /
Administrative Tools / Local Security Policy / Security Settings /
Local Policies / Security Options) the DirectX installation still
fails the usual way.

I've installed all patches from windowsupdate.com, but it
didn't help. Also re-downloading DirectX didn't change anything.

The end of my directx.log file looks like this:

06/16/02 23:12:52: Extracted file
C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\DX1.tmp\dx8bda.cat from cab

06/16/02 23:12:56: Target file: 'C:\WINNT\System32\d3dim700.dll'
        Target file is Version 5.0.2180.1
        Source file is Version 5.1.2600.881
06/16/02 23:13:05: Installed file C:\WINNT\System32\d3dim700.dll
06/16/02 23:13:05: ERROR = Install failed. System Error = -2146762496
06/16/02 23:13:05: SetupForDirectX: Restoring Backups
06/16/02 23:13:05: Installation ended with value -5 = File not copied

The new d3dim700.dll has a higher version number (from Windows
XP?) and apparently that's what's causing the installation to abort.

Does anybody know what's going on here? Any help would be
greatly appreciated.

        Thanks,
        Bert
