we just attached a Dell PowerVault to our Dell Windows
2000 server.
Even though it is made up of 8 physical hard disks, the
server sees one, and we gave the drive the letter G and
the label "Vault." In explorer, under "My Computer," it
appears as "Vault (G:)"
Under "Computer Management">"Shared Folder">"Shares", it
appears under the column "Shared Folder" as "P$". Right-
clicking it there, clicking "Properties" brings up "This
has been shared for administrative purposes. The share
permissions and file security cannot be set."
Then: under "Computer Management">"Shared
Folder">"Shares", I created a new share, selected the G:
drive (in the "Create Shared Folder" dialog box,
for "Folder to share" I had "V:\", made it accessible to
windows PCs and macs, and it worked.
Then I had this thought of having read somewhere that it
is not recommended to share a whole drive (drive letter)
or the root of the drive (I think you know what I
mean)... Is that the case? Also, what role does
the "default sharing" have (what does for administrative
purposes mean/include/imply?)?
Thank you.
