Why is this update so troublesome?
I saw lots of old posts with people saying this update fails and other
people responded saying to contact the free Microsoft security update
technical support.  However, that group can't/won't help with SQL
security updates.  Instead they will refer you to SQL fee-based
technical support even though the only SQL problem you need fixed is
the failure of the security update.  Very annoying especially since
this is wide spread problem issue.
It is so common at this point that I actually heard a random person
complaining about the exact same SQL update on a radio show.

What is the most common causes for this update failing to install?

in my experience you pay first, and if it's a known bug then MS
refunds you the money you paid to open the case- Hide quoted text -

I did another search and found a recent post about it and it dead
ended with no solution I can see.

Well, if Microsoft notices a higher percentage of installs for an
update are failing than average, they should investigate, find the
common causes, add notes and tips to the update page and train the
Windows Update tech support people on what it takes to successfully
install the update.
If nothing works, then the update needs to be pulled and re-released
with a better patch.

This update is several months old now and many people are still not
having the same issue.
It has failed to install on multiple computers in our environment
alone..
It is not as if this update is only a problem for a tiny fraction of
people with some very obscure configuration.
