Error "encryption not supported on sql server" sql server 2000

Hello all... my firts post so be gentle please.....

I have a customer thats has a Win2k3 R2 server with sql 2005 express on it.
They want to conect to a sql 2000 server over the internet for whatever
reason.... but they want to use SSL for encryption... so i exported an
already existing certificate on teh Win2k3 server that has teh sql server
2000 on... i then imported this cert onto teh Win2k3 R2 server running sql
2005 express, i then test an odbc connection out to the server an i get an
error message that says SQL encryption not supported.....

What should i check for?

Thanks..
