The server with SQL Express is a dedicated server at 1and1.com. I do not
have a domain setup on any computer that I use.

I have SQL Express 2005 running on a remote server. On a local Windows
2003 Server, I used Management Studio to access the remote server by IP
address. By using just the IP address and Windows Authentication I was
able to open SQL Express in Management Studio. I have always entered a
SQL login with a password in the past.
Why did this work with Windows Authentication?
Because your Windows login was known and accepted at the remote server,
presumably because the machine is in the same domain.
Whether you use IP address or server name has little to do with it.
