confused ip vs server name

An application was installed using Express for the database.
the connection is defined by the ip address and OBDC dsn used defined
on the ip address as well.

The application does an insert into a table which succeeds, but a
corresponding delete from the same table by the application fails
because it is looking for the server by name instead of ip. Any ideas
where it is getting this from?

An error dialog says
"Could not find server 'This-Server' in
sys.servers. Verify that the correct server name
was specified. If necessary, execute the stored
procedure sp_addlinkedserver to add the server to
sys.servers..

But it is this server not another server.
I am not sure what to look for.
