No, he cannot UPDATE ,make sure that the login is not member of sysadmin
server role , or perhaps you have connected as anopther user

I have 3 databases i need a user to run select statments only I have
not found a easy way to do this. I have assigned the user to
db_denydatawriter and i can still run update statment.
