SSL certificate expired?

Hello. For the past year we have used a certificate that I installed from
our Microsoft Certificate Server onto our SQL Server 2000 machine and used
the "Force protocol encryption" option in the SQL Server Network Utility to
encrypt the data over our internal network. The certificate expired as of
today and everything still seems to be working fine in that our linked
tables to our SQL Server and web apps to our SQL Server are working with no
problems. I'm just wondering since our certificate expired, is the data
traveling over the wire still encrypted? Or is the data now unencrypted
since the certificate expired? I would think it still is encrypted since
the "Force protocol encryption" option is still checked as true and that if
it weren't encrypted then all of our apps would fail to connect to our SQL
Server.

Thanks in advance.

J
