Thanks again for the time to write up your answers. After some
soul-searching, I decided not to fight the design, and go with user
instances as they were meant to be. A note for others interested in the
topic: have a look at "SQL Server Express 2005 user instance w/OLE DB?"
thread in microsoft.public.sqlserver.programming.
