Direct internet acces to SQL Server hasn´t been and isn´t a god pratice to
get results. Every open port in the firewall increases the possibility of an
attack. I would´t do that with SQL Server either because you want to query
some sensible company data. the best think is to write a (WEb-)application
which is secured via SSL to access the SQL Server. Another way would be to
build up a VPN infrastructure to work directly in your own network.
