I've answered it myself. The answer is that everywhere the technical
articles talk about local groups, they mean groups local to the
computer system running SQL Server, not domain local groups.
Although it's possible to add access rights for Domain Local groups
into SQL server, they are completely non-functional - and nothing
gives an error message (other than "permission denied"). Sigh. And
here I was beginning to believe that this was a seriour professional
product.
Hopefully this information is useful to someone, because it sure feels
like I'm talking to myself.
Clifford.
