Conclusion.

I was never able to find a fix to my missing sysadmin privs problem.

As part of a Windows 2003 migration effort, we moved all the development
databases to a new (reused) Windows 2003 server. I simply copied all the
data files over and attached them.

If not for the migration then I was going to execute Dan's suggestion.
Hopefully, it may help someone else.
