Thanks for your help. The password is for ODBC connections to a non SQL Server database which doesn't support NT or Active Directory authentication.
I think the answer lies in the default Cryptographic Service Provider installed on the machine, still would be nice to know what default symmetric algoritm is used. I've added the link to where I found out CryptoAPI is used in DTS:
