"Trusted Connection" requires Domain, not just Workgroup?

Greetings,

Is a Domain arrangement mandatory to use Windows Authentication mode under
SQL Server 2000? The NT 4.0 server and (primarily) Windows 98 clients I am
configuring are members of the same Workgroup, but not members of any
Domain. My assumption was that SQL Server would not care so long as the
proper logins were present on the NT box. Is this incorrect?

More about my specific problem;

In trying to set up an ODBC connection in MS Access 97 to our SQL Server
2000 sp3a back end, I am getting the

"error 18452 login failed for user: <null>, not associated with a trusted
connection"

on the client when setting up the ODBC data source and/or attempting to
access records through the table view.

I have tried enabling "mixed" security mode, this didn't help. I have
TCP/IP and the IPX protocols enabled for the server and client (no
multi-protocol, no named pipes).

Any suggestions are much appreciated, this is really bugging me.

Thanks,

Sam T
