Martin,

You could run Profiler in SQL 7.0 by granting such access. However, KB
Article 310175 "BUG: BOL Incorrectly States That Users Do Not Need to Be
Sysadmin to Use Profiler or SQL Profiler SPs" states pretty clearly that
with SQL Server 2000, the user must have sysadmin privileges.

The SP3 updated BOL still has the mistake in it.
