Hello,
I am pretty new to SQL Server and security, but I was
wondering if someone could help me understand this a
little more.
Where I work, we have SQL Server hosted remotely. We can
connect to it using Enterprise Manager, but the firewall
that the SQL Server is behind will only allow inbound
traffic coming from my work;s IP address.
My question is...
Do people run SQL Server on the internet, without this
kind of firewall protection?
Would I be putting myself in harms way to allowing querys
against my server by applications that are running in
different locations? ( I know that it would be MORE
risky, but is this something that people do, or am I crazy
to be doing it? )
I need people to be able to do mail merges on their local
machine from data on the SQL Server. I could write an
application that grabbed the data from the server and
saved it locally for them, or they could use Enterprise
Manager to connect and export the data to their local hard
drive.
