Problem with SP3 upgrade

On applying SP3 update to our MSDE running on W2KPro,
we've encountered the following and any suggestion on the
resolution is highly appreciated.

1. The SP3 ran from start to end without giving any error
message as if it was successful in the upgrade.
2. On checking the SQL exe file date, it has not changed
at all.
3. When the SQL server was started, it gave an error
message window saying that " Your SQL Server installation
is either corrupt or has been tampered with (unknown
pacage id). Please uninstall them re-run setup to correct
this problem " OK.
4. Then MSDE won't uninstall until all files in the
corresponding folders were deleted.
5. Installed MSDE back and tried the SP3 again. Same
result.
6. Tried SP2 first then SP3 on another computer, but ended
up with the same error.

Please kindly advise if there is any fix to this problem.
