Not sure I understand your question 100%.
To verify the engine version you should log in and run "select @@version"
or run
osql.exe -E -Q"select @@version" -Syourservername
If that's not

Then it needs to be updated. Notice on the last line mine says I'm running
the developer edition of SQL Server. If you see

Then you have MSDE and need to download the MSDE patch.
