The solution to this problem was answered to my delight on the XP newsgroup
as follows:
>>>
We need to add a key in the registry as the following.
"MasterKeyLegacyNt4Domain" is set on the Windows XP machine. This will
enable legacy mode on a NT4 domain:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Cryptography\Protect\Providers\df9d8c
d0-1501-11d1-8c7a-00c04fc297eb]
"MasterKeyLegacyNt4Domain"
Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 00000001
Thanks for using Microsoft News Group!
Sincerely,
Steven Liu
