Access denied on xp_sendmail

Greetings, why would I be gettings the message, "Server: Msg 17906, Level
18, State 1, Line 0 Access denied" when trying to execute xp_sendmail?
Logged in as sa,
sa has server role of System Admin,
database access on master db as db_owner.

Worked friday, quit Monday. did DBCC over the weekend.
