"Rideout,"
Sue is absolutely correct here. Using the analogy of groups in Windows can
help you to understand how to use roles. There are several topics in Books
Online which covers roles, and you might want to read through them to get
more details.
Some good topics in BOL:
"Roles"
"Adding a member to a SQL Server database Role"
"Security Architecture" (good diagram that shows a parallel between roles
and NT groups)
"Logins, Users, Roles, and Groups" (and bears, oh my!)
Seriously, those should give you a solid foundation on roles in SQL!
Thanks Sue for your quick and accurate input!

| They are similar in that you can use them as a security
| management tool. You can add users with the same security
| requirements to roles and then set the permissions for the
| roles (instead of setting the same permissions on all the
| individual users). Users will inherit permissions based on
| their role membership.
