John - by "publicly" accessible do you mean to the internet? If so, then your
own dba's are the last thing you need to be worried about!
Generally speaking, I always give the SQL dba's/support people local admin
rights on a server they support. Do you want them calling you at 03:00 in the
morning because they need to check the SQL errorlogs because SQL won't start.
(The SQL tools to do this are zero good if they can't connect in the first
place....)
