Accessing 7.0 server from 6.5 server

I want to run a daily job that sends a single checksum
value and a datetime stamp to a table on a SQL 7.0 server
from a SQL 6.5 Server.
I dont want to compromise securityon either servers.
I have attempted to setup a remote server, but I am
failing. Yes, this is proberbly a no-brainer, but I am
stumped.
Can anyone tell me what steps I should take.
