When I open my hard disk in windows sometimes it closes it because
of DEP protection I already check for unwanted programs and
activity on my computer through highjackthis, process explorer, and
tcpview to check for unwanted connections. I use search sites like
processlibrary.com to see if any of the processes are unwanted and
if they do not come up in here I search google for it.
so I just assumed that it is ok so I turned off windows explorer DEP
protection but sometimes it still closes it. any ideas or help with
my problem will be much appreciated.
Windows XP will read FAT32 partitions of whatever size you wish to make.
However - Windows XP will only natively format paritions up to 32GB with the
FAT32 file system. NTFS is a much better choice for many reasons for drives
larger than that. The only reason to use FAT32 is cross-compatibility with
older/other OSes. As you know.
I tried to read your 6 sentences above and understand what the problem is -
but I have not. It really sounds like more of a driver/hardware issue to me
if I am even reading into all that correctly.
First - make sure you have the latest Windows XP based drivers for all the
components in your computer straight from the hardware manufacturer of each
product. Pay particular attention to the motherboard/chipset driver. After
that - you may want to use a different tool to format the external drive
with FAT32.
Format larger than 32GB FAT32 within Windows XP with this utility:
http://www1.mager.org/mkdosfs/
Same idea as before - but it may help that you are doing it from within
Windows (May not - but you have nothing to lose.)
