From your explanation I can't make up if the files are still there or not,so hereby my advice in case they are lost.
I've found getdataback (http://www.runtime.org/gdb.htm) and file scavenger
(http://www.quetek.com/prod02.htm) very handy in these situations. Both not
free, but you can download an evaluation and see if it can do the trick or
not, and then decide to buy or not.
I haven't found a decent freeware yet, so I can't give any free advice.

Anyone here knows how to recover data from a backup NTFS drive? I use
the drive to back up my data. However, after system is crashed and
reinstalled, some files is not accessible anymore.
I found some file saved a few months ago is ok. Those saved recently
are not accessible. I am not sure what setttings have been modified.
Appreciate the help to let me know how to recove the data.
