THANK YOU for posting this. If it helps just one Norton 'victim' it was well worth it, dude.

OK, I found it and copied it :) It was in a Vista discussion group..
Rather than uninstall this is what I did (And now have the news groups I want)
Norton Protection Center
Internet Security Tab
Settings
Internet Security and Firewall Options
Firewall Processing
-Uncheck Automatically decide what to do
-Changed setting to Ask me what to do
After making that change, the server connected. I then clicked on Tools/News Groups and they were all listed and I could subscribe.
Thanks for all replies :)

Uninstall Norton, reboot, then try the newsgroups again.

I have tried to follow instructions on setting up News Groups. Am using Vista Home Premium & Windows Mail.
The MS Communities folder is listed. When I try to use the reset list I get an error that says unable to connect to server. I can not download or open the newsgroups to subscribe to any. The info in the Tools/Acounts/MS Communites/Properties seems to be correct. I have the trial version of Norton Suite that came installed with this new computer running.
Any helpful information would be appreciated.
I tried setting up the newsgroup from instructions on setting it up for Outlook, which was advice given in another post.

Instead, I checked through the options and settings in Norton and found what was causing a conflict and changed a simple setting.
Care to share the setting that needed to be changed ? It may/will help other Norton 'victims'. Especially if it's a Default setting.

Any Norton or McAfee applications installed?

Last night I installed the June security updates and restarted my system (a
3-month new laptop running Vista Home Premium). After rebooting I could not
get on the internet. I uninstalled the IE part of the updates and was able
to get on the internet. Much to my aggravation, that update reinstalled and
I again could not get on the internet. I uninstalled the IE update a second
time and am able to access the internet. Now I discover my Windows Mail
will not connect so I am going to have to uninstall the Mail update to see
if I can access my email! What an annoyance. Does anyone know what has
caused this problem with the updates and what I can do to work around the
problems and get the updates to work without cutting me off from the
internet? I have had no other problems with other MS updates todate.
