How unsafe is Outlook Express?

Are there any risks with Outlook Express if I never open
any attachments, never follow any links and read everything
as plain text?

I ask because I have Kaspersky Antivirus and if I use
Mail Anti-Virus, Outllok Express hangs for about every
tenth mail. Now I have disabled Mail Anti-Virus but I
feel a little queasy about it.
